Erika Correa Gutierrez Delivers Record-Breaking Season

Freshman Erika Correa Gutierrez turned in one of the most remarkable seasons in De Anza College Swim & Dive history, capping her year with record-setting performances at both the Coast Conference Championships and the 3C2A State Championships.

A versatile and relentless competitor, Erika proved herself as one of the program's most dynamic swimmers, excelling across distance freestyle, butterfly, and relays while consistently rising to the biggest moments.

At the Coast Conference Championships, she dominated the pool with an impressive collection of gold medals.

She carried that momentum into the 3C2A State Championships, where she etched her name into the De Anza record books – once again as an individual and relay team member.

For Erika, competing at the state level was the culmination of a season-long goal.

"For me, my goal all season was to reach the state level and push for podium finishes," she said.

"Being at 3C2A and competing there was honestly better than I expected. It meant a lot to get back into good shape and see my progress, especially at the state meet. I'm really proud of how the season turned out."

Her ability to deliver across multiple events stood out not only in results, but in the way she elevated those around her – particularly in relay competition.

Despite entering several relays outside of the A group, De Anza consistently broke into the top finishes.

"Coming into relays as B seeds and still earning max medals meant a lot to all of us," Erika said.

"We'd finish our races and just wait, hoping our times would hold against the A heat. Seeing that pay off was such a great feeling. Watching every relay make top eight and hearing our names called was amazing."

De Anza co-head coach Danielle Altman praised Erika's impact on the program, calling her one of the most complete swimmers to ever compete for De Anza.

"Erika is truly one of the best athletes to ever swim at De Anza College," Altman said.

"Her versatility in the pool is so impressive. She can race any stroke at the highest level. More than that, she is a wonderful teammate in and out of the pool."

That versatility was on full display all season, particularly in the demanding combination of distance freestyle and butterfly events.

"Erika races some of the toughest events in swimming," Altman added.

"Her 500 freestyle at the Coast Conference Championships was one of the best races I have ever seen her swim. She continued to rise to the occasion at the State Championships, battling in every race, which shows her toughness."

Beyond the medals and records, Erika emphasized the team environment as the defining part of her experience.

"There were so many amazing memories this season, but my highlight was the Santa Rosa Invite," she said.

"Looking back at race videos and seeing my team cheering me on – especially when we saw goal times on the clock – meant everything."

Her presence as a lead-off swimmer also helped set the tone for De Anza's relay success.

"She brought out the best in our relays, setting a fast standard," her coach noted. "With multiple All-American swims in both individual and relay events, her record-breaking year was special."

As a freshman, Erika's breakout season signals even greater potential ahead. Grounded in gratitude and driven by growth, she is already focused on what comes next.

"I truly wouldn't have been able to do it without my teammates and coaches," she said.

"Their support made my love for swimming stronger than ever. I'm happy with how I did this year, but I know I can push myself to my limits and be at my best next year."

Erika, who is a Mathematics for Transfer major at DA, continues to thrive in the classroom as well. In addition to being an honor roll student, she is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council – serving as Student Services Commissioner.

With a historic season behind her and a bright future ahead, Erika Correa Gutierrez has firmly established herself as a cornerstone of De Anza Swim & Dive – and one of the top student-athletes in the state.
